On February 16, UNA-Tampa Bay hosted a panel discussion on refugees as part of our Signature Human Rights lecture series. The event was hosted at the University of South Florida and consisted of a panel discussion with Suvada Gulan, a former refugee and manager of the Lutheran Services Florida refugee resettlement program; Sylvia Acevedo, director of the Florida Center for Survivors of Torture & the Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services refugee resettlement program; and Janet Blair, community liaison for Refugee Services with the Florida Department of Children and Family Services.
The panel participants were joined by two refugees: Felicien from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Aida from Cuba. Our participants discussed human rights and brought global considerations to the local level by providing an overview of how refugee resettlement is implemented locally in the Tampa Bay area.
